Whether your beau is living back in your hometown or you’ve met someone new during your time at university, Valentine’s Day is a big deal for a lot of people. Of course you’ll always have the sceptics who insist it’s just a capitalist invention designed to get people to spend tons of money on pink teddy bears… but realistically, who doesn’t look forward to a bunch of flowers and some extra love? We’ve come up with some budget-friendly DIY gift ideas to surprise the person you love this February 14th…
Heart shaped cookies
Not only is it a fun activity which will give you the chance to wind down and take a break from studying, but your other half will definitely appreciate the effort. Head down to your cheapest supermarket and buy a boxed mix or some basic cookie ingredients, and get your hands on a heart shaped cutter. Mix, bake, and decorate! They don’t have to be perfect or even neat, because they’ll be made with so much love. You could even plan a date night to make them together, because quality time is as good a gift as any.
Handmade vouchers
Get onto a free design software and put together a cute design, making vouchers to give to your partner – a foot massage, a movie night at your student accommodation, a walk in the park. Things which don’t cost anything, that they can redeem as and when they want to, which will lead to you making lovely memories together and having fun without spending a penny! This is perfect if you’re looking for DIY Valentine’s day gifts for a student budget.
A memory book
Head into town and buy yourself a cheap scrapbook or plain-page notebook, and get some photographs printed out of the two of you. There are apps which allow you to get a certain number of photos printed for free and delivered straight to you just for the cost of postage, meaning this is a really affordable DIY Valentine’s day gift. Stick the photographs into the book, and write in some funny stories and memories from those particular days. It’s the perfect way to celebrate your time together!
Pamper hamper
Got a partner who just loves a pamper? Everyone seems to, these days, and rightly so! Head down to a budget store of some kind and pick up some affordable face masks, a little candle, some body butter and their favourite snack. Pop it all in a box with some tissue paper and it’ll look much more expensive than it actually was – saving you money and getting you some brownie points! It’s a win-win.
Other ideas
There are plenty of other ideas, depending on how creative you are or how skilled in the kitchen. Some of our favourites are:
- Heart-shaped keyrings made from air dry clay
- A hand-made cushion
- A jar of tiny love notes detailing why you love them
- A Valentine’s-themed gonk
- Decorated pebbles
No matter how little you want to spend on your partner, there are definitely some fantastic options available when it comes to Valentine’s Day gifts for a student budget!
