Moving into student accommodation, sharing a home with new people and adjusting to a whole new schedule, can be overwhelming – that’s why we’re constantly sharing tips and tricks to help you settle in better and plan your life. Today, let’s talk about how to create a solid routine for student living…
Create a good bedtime routine
First things first, your sleep is SO important especially as a student. Getting enough sleep ensures your brain is working at peak capacity to ensure you retain all of the knowledge you learn in lectures, seminars and during independent study. And a good night’s sleep starts with a proper bedtime routine – they’re not just for toddlers! By creating a routine that you stick to every single night, you’re able to train your brain and body into knowing when it’s time to switch off.
This might include an evening walk, an hour of reading, a nice warm shower, a mug of herbal tea, a skincare routine, an episode of Grey’s Anatomy… whatever you include in your bedtime ritual, make sure you stick to it. This is such an important part of your routine for student living!
Set your alarm
Even if you’re not due at uni until the afternoon, try not to spend the whole morning sleeping in. By sticking to a routine where you get up at a similar time each morning, you’ll be able to build habits that set you up for success. Get up, get ready and eat a good breakfast – rather than staying in your pyjamas cocooned in your duvet, no matter how tempting that is.
Balance your time
You’re here to learn, of course, but we don’t want you to get stuck in a habit of not socialising at all. Learn to balance your time wisely between studying, spending time with friends, and enjoying some solo downtime. Learning to love your own company too is a vital part of growing up, and you’ll come to really appreciate those solitary hours where you can recharge your social battery! Splitting your time in these three ways is crucial to building a solid routine for student living.
Limit screen time
We know, we know – you don’t want to hear it. But spending time just scrolling TikTok or Instagram isn’t helping you build a healthy routine. It’s wasting time you could be spending on other things. And that’s not to say rest isn’t productive, of course, but maybe limit your screen time to an hour or so rather than endless hours day and night…
Factor in time for exercise and healthy eating
Exercising regularly and eating well will ensure you’re feeling your best, both physically and mentally. Whether it’s a morning walk or some evening yoga, ensure you have time to move at some point during your daily student routine. And even though your day might feel hectic, incorporate some healthy food into your routine too – a proper breakfast, something for lunch, and a hearty dinner. Meal prepping and sharing the cooking duties with your flatmates can make things easier.
Building a solid routine for student living is vitally important if you’re going to make the most of your time as a student. Hopefully these tips will help you achieve just that…
