As a student you’re likely to be on a budget – but at the same time, you want to have fun and explore the new location you’re living in. With that in mind we’ve put together a list of some of the best budget friendly things to do in Hereford and the surrounding area! Remember, a work-life balance is so important for your mental and physical health.
Hereford Cathedral
Visiting cathedrals might sound like something your mum and dad would drag you to do but they are such beautiful and peaceful places, and offer a great insight into the history of a city. Hereford Cathedral, which is free to visit, is no exception. In fact, we have a whole blog post about why you should visit Hereford Cathedral, as it really is one of the best things to do in the city on a budget.
Hereford Cider Museum
If you have an interest in cider – or even just like the taste – then this is the perfect place to spend an hour or so. Entry is reduced to just £3 for students, and the museum is open from 10.30am-4.30pm Monday through Saturday. The museum houses a large collection of artefacts, including cider mills, bottles, presses, vintage photographs, watercolours, advertisements and even a rare collection of English lead crystal cider flutes. It is located inside the original 1888 Bulmer’s factory, and it tells the story of cider making across Britain. You’ll get to learn a lot of local history here, too! There is a tea room on site, and a cider shop selling 150 varieties of this fruit beverage.
The Forest of Dean
If one of your flatmates has a car, then the Forest of Dean is an absolute must. Fresh air does wonders for the brain and if you’ve been cooped up studying or you hit the town centre a little bit too hard last night, a walk in the forest is just what you need. This was also a Harry Potter filming location, which is why a lot of people visit! Harry, Ron and Hermione camp here in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One, having just escaped a Death Eater… The forest is located around a 45-minute drive from Hereford. Best of all? It’s free to visit.
Monkland Cheese Dairy
You can get the bus here from Hereford which takes just under an hour – the perfect amount of time to catch up on some course reading! This is a working dairy which produces artisanal cheese, and they offer tours and experience days so you can see how it all works. There is also a tea shop and of course, the opportunity to buy plenty of cheese to take back to your student kitchen and use in all of your favourite dishes.
There are plenty of budget friendly things to do in Hereford and nearby, especially if you’re savvy about it. These are just a few of them, but don’t miss out on visiting Kenchester Water Gardens, snapping a selfie with the Hereford bull statue and exploring the fabulous Hereford Buttermarkets.
