It’s getting to the time of year where students across the country are moving into accommodation, ready to start studying and begin the journey of living away from home for the first time. It’s a nerve wracking but totally exciting time, and we’re here to let you know what you can expect from your first week in student accommodation…
Unpacking and settling in
First things first, it’s time to unpack all of your clothes, shoes, pyjamas, new stationery, beauty bits, cleaning products and so on. Make sure you have enough storage space, and if you need to invest in a little trolley or some boxes for an extra place to put your bits and bobs then this is a great idea. Set your room up so you have plenty of space to comfortably move around, and ensure you’re not blocking the windows or radiator/heater to allow heat and light in.
Settling in is important – get to know the local area, get yourself into a good routine, and most importantly, get to know your flatmates! Say hi, introduce yourself, plan a night in (or night out!) together. Share stories and plans, and if you’re not sure about something then ask.
This will all help you feel settled and at home, so you can thrive in your student accommodation life.
Orientation and events
From meeting your tutors and coursemates to campus tours and freshers’ fair, there will be plenty going on in the first week (or few weeks) of your life as a student. You will have new timetables to learn, lecture theatres to find, clubs to consider joining and much more. All of this will take place in the first days and weeks of your life as a student at university!
Be sure to attend all of these events so that you can really ingratiate yourself into the student community. It’ll help you make friends outside of just your flatmates, help you get to know the campus and wider area, and ensure you’re making the most of your university experience during your first week in student accommodation.
Adjusting to independence
Of course, a huge part of your first week in student accommodation will be focused on getting used to living independently – cooking for yourself, cleaning a kitchen and bathroom, doing your own food shopping, budgeting, and much more. Moving away from home can be a difficult time with homesickness and feeling lonely, so dealing with this is a really important step. Stay in touch with friends and family, and get yourself out and about so you’re not constantly stuck in.
There will be times during this week when you’re totally alone; when your flatmates are out but you don’t have anywhere to be, and it’s good to learn to love your own company. Read a book, do a puzzle, have a pamper. You’ve got this!
Moving out for the first time and living in student accommodation can feel overwhelming, but you’re about to embark on a part of your journey that you’ll remember forever. From meeting new people to getting acquainted with the local area, your first week will be a busy one – remember to take time for yourself, stay relaxed, and soak up every moment.
