Getting into university might seem like a mammoth task, and something that can really pile stress onto your sixth form or college days. If your university course requires an interview, this can be an added worry for a lot of people! Get the date straight in your diary
When you get invited for an interview, make sure you jot the date down somewhere – in your diary or in your phone calendar – to ensure you can definitely attend and don’t end up double booking yourself! This is one of the most important occasions of your life to date, and you want to minimise the stress as much as possible. If you work a part time job then be sure you are off on that day, and if it’s a weekday speak to your school or college as soon as possible.
Let them know any accommodations you’ll need to be made
If you have a disability or additional needs, chances are you might need some accommodations to be made during your interview. This is in no way anything to be embarrassed about, but you should make the university aware as soon as possible so they can ensure your access needs are met!
Re-read the course information AND your personal statement
Make sure you’re completely clear on what the course entails, as this will give you some insight into the types of questions they might ask you in the interview. This can also help you shape your own questions, if you have any, which you’ll be able to ask at the end. And refresh yourself in terms of your personal statement, so you’re 100% sure what you told them about yourself in case they ask you to elaborate on anything you’ve mentioned.
Wear something comfortable
You don’t need to wear a suit for a university interview, unless you’ve been asked to. Of course you should wear something smart, rather than a tracksuit for example, but ultimately if you’re feeling comfortable then you’ll likely perform better in your interview!
Speak to current students
If you can, try and get in touch with current students on the course to find out how their interview went – what sort of questions were asked, who conducted the interview and so on. This will help you feel as prepared as possible. They’ll be able to advise you and offer words of encouragement ahead of the day itself.
Bring all required documents
When you’re invited to a university interview, you will be given a list of anything you need to bring with you – predicted grades, previous exam results, even a portfolio of your work if you’re doing a more creative course. Make sure you remember them, as often anything you’ve been asked to bring will be a big focus of the interview.
Be yourself
Above all, be yourself. A university interview is the chance for you to show how great of a fit you are for the course and the institution, so you really need to let your personality shine. Don’t be afraid of messing up – just be you, and try to enjoy the experience as the first stepping stone in your amazing university journey.
