Christmas is definitely creeping up on us, and if you want to deck out your student accommodation then you’ve come to the right place – here are some amazing DIY decor ideas you can make which won’t ruin your rented walls… Let’s go!
DIY gonks
Gonks are everywhere this Christmas – and you can make really cute little ones with just a couple of supplies. This would be a really lovely way to spend an evening with your flatmates, making gonks together with a Christmas film on and some hot chocolates…
You’ll need:
A white sock
A fluffy sock
Dry rice
Elastic bands
Wool
Simply fill your white sock with rice, about a pint glass worth, and secure it with an elastic band. Cut off the top if there’s a lot of fabric left over! Make a little round nose in the middle of the sock, again securing with an elastic band, then pull the fluffy sock over the top – to the top of the nose – to make a hat. Tie the very end of the sock into another small ball, and you’re pretty much done. If you want a beard on your gonk, use the wool to make one and tie it around the nose – or you can buy some faux fur and stick that on instead!
Make sure you all name your gonks, and sit them in your communal living space.
Hot chocolate station
We know student kitchens can get cluttered and messy but if you’ve got some spare counter space then a hot chocolate station is the perfect festive addition. You can pick up all the bits and bobs you’ll need in places like B&M or Home Bargains, so it doesn’t need to cost a lot!
You’ll need:
Empty glass jars (if you’re thrifty, these can be empty food jars you’ve washed out)
Hot chocolate
Marshmallows
Candy canes
Sprinkles
Christmas mugs
Clear a space, and set out your jars in a line – you can label them, if you have a label maker, but this definitely isn’t a necessity! Decant your foodie bits into the jars, arrange the mugs next to or around them, and you’re pretty much done. Of course you can jazz it up however you like – add some hot chocolate bombs, place some baubles around the whole thing… the choice is all yours.
Giant baubles
These are so simple but really effective – just be really careful while you’re making them! Lay some newspaper down, or do it outside somewhere safe; you don’t want to risk getting paint anywhere…
You’ll need:
Plastic/PVC footballs
Paint
Glitter
Gold paper cups
Paint the footballs any colour you like, and leave them to almost dry. When they’re a bit tacky, add your glitter; chunky glitter works best! Then make the top bit of the bauble by cutting the rim off the top of a gold paper cup, and cutting evenly spaced chunks out so you can splay the remaining tabs and adhere it to the top of the football. Use the rim you’ve cut off to create a bit of a handle and stick that on too. Voila!
These DIY Christmas decorations are perfect for your student accommodation, and they won’t break the bank either. Here’s to the festive season!
