When studying at university, there are so many new experiences to be had. For many of you, you’ll be in a brand new place – and this means you can visit nearby locations that will blow you away. Make memories with your flatmates, or wow your parents/family/friends when they come to visit from back home! We’ve put together a list of fantastic day trips from Gloucester to get you started…
Stratford-upon-Avon
If you have a car, then you can get to Stratford-upon-Avon in just over an hour from our Blackfriars Residence. It’s around 2.5 hours on public transport so not impossible, but definitely easier in a car. This iconic medieval market town was the birthplace of the one and only William Shakespeare, and as such there is a lot to do related to the poet and playwright – visit his birthplace and where he went to school, the new house he bought, the farm his mother grew up on… the list is endless. You can also admire the beautiful River Avon, visit Anne Hathaway’s cottage, do a ghost walk and much more!
London
The big smoke is just 2 hours away from Gloucester by train, and of course the capital has *so much* to offer. If you’ve moved to Gloucester from somewhere much further away from London, then you might not have visited the city very often – make the most of being a couple of hours away and enjoy everything from fine dining to royal history, afternoon tea to Harry Potter filming locations and plenty more. Whatever you fancy, London has something that will suit you!
Bath
An hour’s drive away or just under 2 hours on the train, Bath is another gorgeous city within easy reach of Gloucester. It is known for – and named after – the famous Roman baths which you can still visit to this day. There is a museum there now, as well as a restaurant! Bath also has a stunning gothic abbey, plenty of shops and places to eat/drink, the beautiful Royal Victoria Park and so much more. This makes for a lovely little day out or even a weekend away, if your student budget can stretch to it.
Tewkesbury and Winchcombe
Another medieval market town, Tewkesbury is just stunning – plus it’s near to Winchcombe, which is another lovely place to visit. With many interesting museums, a stunning Abbey, a battle trail, a steam railway and Sudeley Castle between them, Tewkesbury and Winchcombe make for the perfect day trip from Gloucester. Your Instagram will be popping! There are markets, country walking trails, cycling routes and nature reserves – so you’ll be able to get your fill of countryside goodness here.
Being able to go on day trips at the weekend is the perfect way to break up your studies and enjoy some refreshing downtime, make some memories and have a whole load of fun – so we hope you enjoy these handy ideas for day trips from Gloucester!
