Keeping fit while living at uni can be difficult – but it’s actually quite simple to set up your own mini home gym within your student accommodation bedroom. This will allow you to work out from the comfort of your own space, while watching TV or listening to music! Here are some of our best tips…
Maximise your space
If working out is important to you, make sure you’re able to make the most of your space. Invest in storage hacks like under-the-bed boxes or bags, over-the-door storage, and trolleys you can easily wheel out of your room while you work out. This will allow you to keep your bedroom clutter free so you can exercise at uni safely and efficiently.
Use what you have
When it comes to working out, make use of what you already have. If you’re not really into weight lifting but want to start incorporating it into your exercise routine, try using heavy tins from your accommodation kitchen cupboards or a heavy textbook. Take the stairs instead of the lift, or even use the stairs as a workout in themselves – running up and down them a few times will get your heart pumping. You can load up a rucksack with bottles of pop and books to make it heavy, and enhance your squats that way. There’s plenty of ideas to help you exercise at uni!
Invest in compact equipment
If you do want to branch out and buy actual exercise equipment for your daily student accommodation workouts, look for things you can easily store when you’re not using them. Resistance bands, a skipping rope, a yoga mat and a kettle bell are all things that can really enhance your exercise routine without taking up too much space in your bedroom, as opposed to bulky equipment like an exercise bike. Create a dedicated space to store these items so you still have plenty of room for studying and relaxing.
Stay motivated
Set yourself goals in terms of how much exercise you want to do; 15 minutes a day, half an hour per day, and so on. Think of ways to reward yourself – if you do half an hour a day, for example, you might treat yourself with a new outfit or a trip to the cinema. Having this motivation in place is really useful. Think of your end goals, too: do you want to lose weight, get fitter, feel healthier? Whatever it is, keep that in mind as you plan your exercise routine. Mix things up, too, so you don’t get bored! If you do the same thing every day, you’ll end up not wanting to do anything at all which is hard when you’re hoping to exercise at uni…
Exercising while living at student accommodation doesn’t need to be difficult or expensive – a gym subscription is great, but it can be difficult to find the time to get to the gym in between your studies, and you might not have the spare cash to pay for it. These handy tips can help you stay healthy on a budget, and hopefully you’ll have fun in the meantime!
